Check it out and I’m sure you’ll agree there’s a lot more to know about the role of the face in expressing emotion.

It’s fascinating to think about such topics as Facial Aging, Facial Attractiveness, Facial Deception and The Face in Health and Disease among many other topics available here on the website. There is a lot to this website, click around and you’ll find some really interesting things like the sale of the Facial Action Coding System Manual (FACS) created by Paul Ekman and Joseph Hager and Wallace Friesen.

Also take a look at the Library, where you’ll find reference materials, which despite the fact that the site hasn’t been updated in a long time – it looks it, still remain relevant works today.

Do you have some favourite references regarding emotions and the face or body language? What are they? Comment below.

Once again, I have chosen to review a local Calgary author I met at the Calgary chapter of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers. Her name is Judy Arnall and her book is entitled, “Discipline Without Distress” (3rd Edition, 2010) and can best be described as an emotionally intelligent parenting book. The subtitle is “135 tools for raising caring, responsible children without time-out, spanking, punishment, or bribery.” Without bribery? How is that possible? ;-)

But seriously, I really like the focus on how the parent is feeling and how the child is feeling. This consistent theme throughout the book makes it, as I said, an emotionally intelligent parenting book. The five keys of discipline, according to Judy are:

Teach not hurt.

Stay with your “no” and honour your word.

Look for the need or feeling (NOF) behind the behaviour.

Separate your anger from your discipline.

Be the person you want them to be.

Judy goes into why we have come to believe what many of us believe about discipline and then goes on to make a very compelling case for changing our traditional (irrational) beliefs for more contemporary (rational) beliefs about how to discipline children.

Judy claims we can help our children gain:

Strong communication skills

Healthy self-esteem, confidence, and greater emotional intelligence

Assertiveness, empathy, problem-solving, and anger management skills

a respectful, loving connection with us as parents.

I highly recommend this book to all parents and would be parents. Here’s to ending, as Judy says, “resentment, frustration, anger, tears, and defiance and moving to a more loving, respectful, teaching and fun connection with our children.” Check out Judy’s website at http://professionalparenting.ca/

This month we have website(s) of the month for you. I couldn’t decide on a couple of different quotation sites for quotes about emotions and emotional things. I did find it interesting that John Lennon’s famous, “Life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans” from his song, “Beautiful Boy” was attributed to that famous author, “Anonymous” ;-) Anyway, that first site is http://www.buzzle.com/articles/emotional-quotes.html Additionally, I found it quite interesting that when asked for the most inspirational and motivational quotes that people had ever read in a discussion group I belong to, many people did not attribute their quotations to anyone, some attributed their quotations to themselves, and many were not inspirational at all, but commented on some other aspect of humanity. So, I concluded that one person’s inspiration is another persons interesting comment on another aspect of humanity ;-) Another quotation site I found interesting was http://thinkexist.com/quotes/with/keyword/emotional/ and finally, http://www.afterquotes.com/great/quotes/emotional.htm

I just love a good quotation, don’t you? ;-) Please comment and leave me one of your favourites.

I’m so excited by the books I’ve been given to review recently by really wonderful authors that I either know or have met. I’ve got quite the pile that I eagerly look forward to reading. Which one am I going to talk about this month? I think I have to mention my friend and colleague, Hugh Culver’s new book, “Give Me Break: the art of making time work for you.” You have to grab a copy of this book. I don’t always say that in my reviews, but this time I really mean it. I mean, who among us can’t be better at managing time? And you will love Hugh’s informative and often humourous approach to the subject. Hugh helps us see what we currently doing, examine the bad habits that we’ve formed, and through wonderful self-assessments and exercises and stories shows us the way forward to improved time management. In fact, you can go straight to Hugh’s website to make your purchase by clicking here.

The EQ tool of the month is a poster you can print off and put on your bulletin board or frame it and hang it over your desk or in your work station. It’s a quotation that you may well recognize and that inspired me so much I asked my brilliant graphic design team from PinkSheepMedia to make it into a poster. The quotation comes from Marianne Williamsons, “A Return to Love: Reflections on the principles of a course in miracles”. It was made famous by Nelson Mandela when he used it in his inauguration speech in 1994 when he became president of South Africa and often get’s incorrectly attributed to him.

The quotation, as you may re-call is, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

This month’s book is “Don’t Let Your Emotions Run Your Life: How dialectical behavior therapy can put you in control” by Scott E. Spradlin, A New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook. This is a wonderful workbook that I have found to be invaluable for examining our own relationship with emotions. I bought it from Odin Books in Vancouver, which has all kinds of these ‘self-help’ type of workbooks. See www.odinbooks.ca

It explores such key concepts as the nature of emotions, naming and describing emotions, emotional triggers, validation, emotion regulation. It is chock full of critical ideas in developing EQ skills – from a therapeutic point of view.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is described as “an eclectic mix of cognitive behavioral techniques, skills training, and Buddhist wisdom.” This made me smile and think – aren’t there a lot of programs and approaches that can be described this way? ;-)

Check out this book, let me know what you think, and send me your nominations for our monthly book review.

I thought the handout was brilliant and it dawned on me that anyone wanting to develop their emotional intelligence skills would go through the same process. I took the idea and re-wrote the whole thing in relation to EQ development. My thinking was that just like a smoker goes through the stages while quitting smoking, a manager goes through the same stages when developing their EQ. We’re really talking about people who choose to develop their EQ skills as choosing to change their lives. Even though we don’t always think about it that way.

This month’s book is “Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative” by Ken Robinson. My brilliant daughter, Becky, and her brilliant partner, Sherwin got me this book for Christmas and I’m just loving it. If you take a look at Ken Robinson’s TED talks, you will become an instant fan. He’s very funny and very insightful about the sad state of our educational systems all over the world. One of his memorable lines is “we’re educating children for a world of work which won’t even exist by the time they graduate.” In his book, Robinson observes that emotional intelligence skill development takes a back seat to the ever more competitive drive for higher marks and academic excellence. He then goes on to develop a lucid and well articulated call for educational reform. An exhilarating read for ‘recovering’ teachers like me ;-)

What do you think? Have you read it? Any suggestions for books or want to send in a review of your own? Your reviews are always welcome – just make them brief and to the point and we’ll include it in an upcoming EQ2G0.

My pick for website of the month is http://www.executivecoachingforum.com/ This is a group of executive coaches from the Boston area who have been working together since 1999 and have amassed a great many resources that they freely give away on the site. The most impressive freebie is The Executive Coaching Handbook, which, as you will see is in it’s 4th Edition. Be sure to check out the Resources page and the incredible coaching bibliography and the tools for executives and for executives’ organizations. This site is a great demonstration of the idea that the more generous you are online, the more comes back to you in the way of “whuffie” or social capital.

Let me know what you think of this resource – oh, and send me your suggestions for future websites of the month.
