The Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i) was the first scientifically validated assessment tool for emotional intelligence skills and is now the most widely used, best selling, most flexible, most studied, cost effective measure of EQ competencies in the world.
To be a highly effective person is to demonstrate the competencies measured by the EQ-i. These competencies are highly correlated with the ability to provide inspirational leadership, the ability to provide outstanding customer service, the ability to be an excellent team member, and the ability to be a leading salesperson – all the elements of business that are based on human interaction. Why not just say “people skills”? We could, but we now know so much more than that, but if you’re more comfortable with “people skills” – then we won’t stop you. However, we now know that each and every one of the competencies related to demonstrating highly effective people skills is related to one’s ability with emotions – one’s own and the emotions of others.
The Bar-On Model of EQ is measured by the EQ-i and consists of 15 ‘EQ Competencies’
Emotional Self-Awareness – the ability to be in touch with and understand one’s own emotions
Assertiveness – the ability to speak up when necessary
Self-Regard – the ability to accept and respect one’s self
Independence – the ability to be free from dependency on others
Self-Actualization – the ability to live a fulfilling life
Empathy – the ability to pay attention to the emotions of others
Interpersonal Relationships – the ability to have relationships of good quality
Social Responsibility – the ability to give back, make a contribution
Problem Solving – the ability to take a step-wise, systematic approach to problems
Flexibility – the ability to transition one’s emotions from one state to another
Reality Testing – the ability to be grounded, present, and mindful
Stress Tolerance – the ability to tolerate stress without a drop in performance
Impulse Control – the ability to resist temptations to act in regretful ways
Happiness – the ability to be satisfied with one’s life
Optimism – the ability to focus on the positive
The EQ-i is a Level ‘B’ psychometric and, as such, requires that one meet the academic requirements to use a Level ‘B’ assessment tool OR that they take the EQ-i Certification Course. I have met people who were using the EQ-i as a result of meeting the academic requirements and, unfortunately, they were not adequately prepared to leverage some of the more sophisticated aspects of the EQ-i . EITC offers the EQ-i Certification Course in a number of cities as an open enrolment course and is regularly invited to deliver custom, in-house courses which saves organizations on travel and accommodation expenses and ensures that an organization’s unique needs are met.
