Book Review: “The Other Kind of Smart”
The Other Kind of Smart: Simple Ways to Boost Your Emotional Intelligence for Greater Personal Effectiveness and Success, by Harvey Deutschendorf, 2009. Harvey was a participant in one of my courses very early on in the ’90s – an ‘early adopter’ and has written a marvelous addition to the likes of the EQ Edge (Stein and Book) and Emotional Intelligence in Action (Hughes, Patterson, and Terrell) in that it is focused on the Bar-On Model with its 15 EQ competencies with a chapter on each competency.
What I really like about this book is that it provides a unique perspective that is quite different from other books on the same topic. There are a lot of great stories with great characters about everyday situations to which we can all relate. Harvey succeeds in really making the content come alive through these page turning stories. In addition, he adds his own Mini EI Quiz and talks about getting honest with one’s self as “getting real.” I like it! Enjoy!
